Many people visit an obstetrics and gynecology clinic after realizing they are pregnant, but recently, as health awareness has increased, some people choose to undergo a bridal checkup before marriage. This checkup is performed to examine whether there are any obstetric or gynecologic abnormalities in the body before pregnancy.
Specifically, it may include cervical cancer screening, checking for the presence, location, and size of uterine fibroids, checking for ovarian tumors, sexually transmitted disease testing (such as chlamydia, gonorrhea, and syphilis), and breast cancer screening. If necessary, receiving treatment early can help you prepare for pregnancy with greater peace of mind.

In recent years, the number of women experiencing pregnancy at an advanced maternal age has increased, so it is also important to confirm whether there are any underlying internal medical conditions and what kind of treatment is currently being received.
Conditions such as thyroid disorders, impaired glucose tolerance including diabetes, hypertension, nephritis, collagen diseases, and inflammatory bowel diseases are relatively common in outpatient practice. Pregnancy itself places a burden on the body, so becoming pregnant while these underlying conditions are unstable may worsen the disease or make it difficult to continue the pregnancy. It is therefore important to consult carefully with an internal medicine physician and plan pregnancy appropriately.

Another condition that is often overlooked is dental disease, in other words, tooth decay. Dental disease may become a cause of premature birth, and after delivery it may be difficult to find time for treatment because of childcare responsibilities. For this reason, it is recommended to complete dental treatment before pregnancy whenever possible.

It is also important for both the individual and their partner to confirm before pregnancy whether they have immunity to viruses such as rubella. Rubella infection during pregnancy is said to cause eye and ear disorders and congenital heart abnormalities in the baby. Since the rubella vaccine cannot be administered during pregnancy, vaccination is recommended if necessary.
